MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Testimony is underway in the trial of a former FIU student who is accused of murdering a football player during a fight on the college’s campus in 2010.
Quentin Wyche is charged with second-degree murder for the alleged fatal stabbing of Kendall Berry.
It is believed that a fight started earlier in the day when Wyche argued with Berry’s girlfriend. Police say Wyche then grabbed a pair of scissors during a dispute and stabbed Berry to death.
Wyche, asked for the case to be dismissed under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground Law” as he contends that Berry picked a fight with him outside the school’s recreation center, with more than a dozen of Berry’s buddies and fellow football players backing him up. His attorneys agree saying he acted in self-defense.
Last year Wyche’s attorneys tried to have the charges dropped but Judge Milton Hirsch denied the motion saying Wyche failed to show he had a reason to believe his life was in danger when he stabbed Berry.
